IELTS Task 2: Creative Artists and Freedom of Expression.

Artists freedom of expression IELTS PTE.jpg

Creative artists should always be given freedom to express their own ideas (in words, pictures, music, films) in whichever way they wish. There should be no governmental restrictions on what they do. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

40 minutes, 250 words at least.

Answer:

Introduction: (Introduce the topic while giving your OPINION and MENTIONING the reasons supporting your opinion. EXPLAIN the reasons in the body paragraphs)

Freedom of expression is a fundamental right for every citizen of a democratic country. However, the use of this right is permitted only as long as it does not harm another person’s rights or sentiments. While creative expression of ideas is important for the progress of human civilization, it should not hurt someone’s cultural or religious sentiments.

(So, I have taken a middle ground. While the first body paragraph should be devoted in support of freedom of expression, the second body paragraph will support restrictions.)

Body Paragraph 1: (Support freedom with example)

Artists have played an instrumental role in the evolution of our world. Their work expressed as a book or a painting or a movie not only shapes our opinion but also makes us question the existing belief systems. For instance, sci-fi movies based on imaginative novels such as I-Robot by Issac Asimov have enabled humans to explore Artificial Intelligence and Robotics deeper. Likewise, it was creative novels written in the early twentieth century that challenged the tradition of Sati, burning a widow alive with her dead husband, and forced Indians to introspect and abolish the evil custom.

Body Paragraph 2: (Restrict freedom with example)

However, not all freedom is beneficial for the society. Some beliefs and traditions which form the core of human existence must be respected and should never be denigrated. For example, some newspapers published cartoons of Prophet Mohammad in a disrespectful form, and this hurt the Muslim’s religious sentiments across the world. Similarly, an author disrespected Hindu Gods and Goddesses in a novel and there was a significant resistance to the book’s publication and promotion.

Conclusion: (Conclude with Future + Impact)

In conclusion, artists must have freedom of expression in a restricted form so that they can contribute towards the progress of humanity through creative ideas while respecting the sentiments of all groups of society. It should be an inclusive process that keeps in mind the sensitivities of everyone.
