IELTS Academic Task 1

20 minutes, 150 words at least.

The given line graph illustrates the number quantity of goods transported in the UK in a span of 28 years by different modes of transportation namely road, water, rail, and pipeline. The x-axis shows the numbers of years ranging from 1974 to 2002 and the y axis gives the unit of goods transported in million tonnes. (Well written)

In 1974, 70 million tonnes of goods were transported through road. This figure kept on rising except two dips, it and crossed the 80 million tonnes mark twice and ended up with 98 million tonnes in 2002. On the other hand, water transported 40 million tonnes of goods were transported via water in 1974 which and the figure gradually increased till 1982, after which it remained steady before slightly declining in 1998. It crossed 60 million tonnes in 2002.

Goods transported by rail were 40 million tonnes in 1974, which and fluctuated over a period of time and concluded with the figure just above 40 million tonnes in 2002. The pipe line graph always showed an upward trend in spite of starting with 10 goods and ended ending with 22 goods. (You have used which after years. …. 1974 which ……. this is not recommended because WHICH modifies the noun it is linked to. In your writing, it modifies 1974. However, it should ideally modify the amount of goods and not the year.)

Except for rail, all the other graph modes of transport showed an increasing pattern. The water transportation in the middle phase remained static where as the other the three means of transportation either climbed or dropped.

It can be observed that road transportation was the most preferred route throughout the period.

208 words. Well-written except for the mistake of not mentioning “million tonnes”. Please avoid this to score well in the exam.
