IELTS and PTE examiners have asked questions on crime several times in the past. Here are some similar questions on this website.

  1. Criminals commit crimes once their sentence is over.
  2. Involvement of youth in crime.
  3. Criminals should do unpaid work for the community.

Introduction: (Introduce the topic, state your opinion and MENTION reasons supporting your opinion.)

The crime rate has increased tremendously since the dawn of the twentieth century. While some people believe that it cannot be controlled, I think the active participation of individuals, close cooperation of various organs of the state coupled with extensive use of technology can curtail the crime rates.

Body Paragraph 1: (Reason 1 supporting opinion)

Active participation of every adult citizen in preventing crimes in his locality will go a long way in maintaining security. Keeping this in mind, several regional governments have introduced the concept of citizen watch. The people are made eyes and ears of the law enforcement agencies and are motivated to inform the agencies as soon as they witness anything suspicious.

Body Paragraph 2: (Reason 2 supporting opinion)

Moreover, close cooperation of government departments such as intelligence, police, and vigilance can prevent many crimes from occurring. Criminals often resort to breaking the law in one state and crossing over to another state to benefit from lack of cooperation between the law enforcement agencies of the two states. Catching such criminals requires not only cooperation between two state police departments but also a national investigating agency that has jurisdiction over the whole country.

Body Paragraph 3: (Reason 3 supporting opinion)

Finally, extensive use of technology can help curtail crime rates. Since many criminals are active on social media websites such as Facebook, the investigating agencies scour through millions of social media posts to catch people who may try to commit crimes in the near future. This has been adopted as a credible and reliable strategy in the global war against terrorism.

Conclusion: (Conclude the essay with FUTURE and IMPACT)

Increasing crime rates – both small crimes such as a theft and heinous ones such as a terrorist strike – is a threat to modern social order. Adopting right strategy and tactics will help governments reduce crime rates and make society more peaceful and secure.

  1. It has become a worrisome trend in recent times on the rate at which crime increases globally. It is also believed that with this trend, that the whole world will go into doom in no distant time. The question at the center of this issue remains, what can be done to reduce crime rate? While it sounds strange to some people that crime can be mitigated, if not totally eradicated, others are of the opinion that if public education proper governmental policies are put in place, crime rate will decrease and to a large extent be prevented as well.
An African proverb says that prevention is better than cure, so also is the case of crime prevention. We now live in an age where government of nations only find ways to enrich themselves dubiously instead of upholding the core governmental duties of which crime detection and prevention is cardinal. When adequate measures such as punishment of offenders are put into place by the government, this will go a long way into discouraging prospective offenders. In the political scene of Nigeria, the legislature has passed a bill seeking to kill anyone found guilty in acts such as kidnapping and child rape.
Also, the general public needs to be educated on the negative effects of committing crime as some people are truly ignorant of the law. In most developing countries, the level of literacy is very low and this speaks volume of what to expect from the nation in terms of general conduct of the populace. Many undeveloped nations still have people that practice jungle justice and they do this without knowing the implications.
In conclusion, the government as well as the masses are the ones to mitigate and prevent crime in a society, therefore, this brings an end to the question of whether crime can be prevented or not.
