This is a common question most reputed institutes ask their students. Other variants of this question are:
Why our school (Harvard), why not another (Stanford)?
Why MBA/ MS/ Law degree from our school?
A business school or a law school wants to know how much efforts you’ve put into understanding whether the school is the right place for you. Answering this question is certainly not easy and requires you to introspect about the following questions:
- What is my career goal – short-term and long-term?
- How is this goal a logical extension of my past studies and/ or work experience?
- How will this institution help me achieve the goal?
Let me present an example.
“I’m a civil engineer with five years experience as a construction manager. My long-term goal is to run my own construction business by 2030, and this requires business skills such as contract negotiations, raising finance, leading complex multi-cultural teams, and managing diverse actors ranging from clients and architects to construction teams. I need a strong skill set along with access to a huge alumni network that only ……… can offer. Your institution’s network has several famous civil engineers such as …… and …… who started their own businesses and became immensely successful.”
DO NOT GIVE GENERAL STATEMENTS. You must give specific details.
Filling these blank spaces requires tremendous research and reaching out to the alumni network, professors, and current students.
The answer must clearly and concisely state “Why ABC” and indirectly state “why not XYZ”. What are the two or three specialties about ABC that align its course with your goals and sets it apart from others? In a nutshell, if you are not assigned a place in ABC’s program, you’ll miss the career’s bus and will never achieve your optimum potential.
