Writing an effective example is highly valued in the IELTS / PTE exam. What are the elements of an efective example? Let me enumerate a few:
- It contains data and facts. Try writing names, numbers, dates, etc.
- Be specific. Do not use general words such as good, bad, great, etc.
- Stick to the idea being explained in the paragraph. Make sure the example does not deviate from the idea.
Now, let us go through two examples a student just sent me.
Question: With a fast pace of modern life more and more people are turning towards fast food for their main meals. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
Example for advantages: A recent (time) survey of the World Health Organisation (name) in New York (place), states that more than 70
% percent (number) of the corporate staff, prefers to have fast food because of the less time it consumes since it takes lesser time to consume than home made food.
Example for disadvantages: A survey held in 2009 (time), by the National Institute of Nutrition (name), in a local community, shows that 85
% percent (number) of children are rapidly gaining weight (becoming obese) due to the consumption of fast food. (Another effective way is to compare two time periods. ….. shows that while only 10 percent children were obese in 1990, the percentage has swollen to 45 percent.)
Question: International marketing is sometimes seen as invasive and an intrusion into the country in question. Others argue that it is a necessary and economical form of education in addition to spreading ideas, language and culture.
Example for advantages: A (please add a time frame) survey conducted by the University of Queensland (name) shows
that there is a 30 % percent (number) increase in international student admissions after their the university’s international marketing campaign.
Example for disadvantages: A recent (time) survey conducted by
the social groups of a local community in India (place, name) shows that there have been moderations in their the community’s culture and language after the intensive marketing campaigns of international brands like such as Coke, Levis (name) and many more.
