IELTS Essay January 2018: Younger People Losing Interest in Teaching.

In some counties, younger people are increasingly losing interest in teaching. Why is this happening? What can be done to improve the situation? Give reasons for your answer and include examples from your own experience.

40 minutes, 250 words at least.

Answer:

Introduction: (Introduce the topic with REASONS and SOLUTIONS.)

Though teaching is a noble career that brings respect, the younger generation is losing interest in it due to several reasons ranging from lower remuneration to need for hard work. The situation can be altered by offering better financial rewards to teachers and reducing work pressure on them.

Body Paragraph 1: (Explain the reasons)

Various studies have proven that teachers are given lower salaries than other professionals (IDEA 1). While doctors, lawyers, engineers, and nurses earn huge per hour pay, teachers earn far lesser income. This has forced the younger generation to move away from this profession and choose other, more rewarding options (EXPLANATION of idea 1). Moreover, teachers are often over-worked and burdened with non-teaching activities (IDEA 2). Though the schools close down at 2 pm, teachers not only have to prepare lectures for the next day but also correct notebooks. They usually work late into the night. Also, teachers in a few countries such as India are forced to do non-teaching activities. The government often engages them in data collection during census or elections (EXPLANATION of idea 2). This makes teaching a less rewarding profession both financially and personally.

Body Paragraph 2: (Explain the solutions)

This situation can be altered if the government increases teachers’ salaries so that they are at par with those of doctors and engineers. This will motivate the younger generation to view teaching as a rewarding career (IDEA 1 with EXPLANATION). Furthermore, the unnecessary work pressure needs to be reduced (IDEA 2). If doctors are not given the data collection duty, teachers should also be absolved of such activities. Youth will opt for teaching as a career only if they are allowed to focus on core activity of teaching – education (EXPLANATION of idea 2)

Conclusion:

In conclusion, though teaching is losing its sheen for the younger generation, governments can take steps to make it more attractive career option. If teachers are allowed to focus on the job of education only and are offered appealing salaries, the youth will choose to teach as a career. This will provide more qualified teachers to children and shape a bright future for the country.
