I’m starting a new series to discuss various sentences with the student community with the intention of teaching how to write an effective sentence:

Today’s sentence is from an article on thewire.in.

“But on Friday, things took an ugly turn when the ‘long march’, taken out to protest the recent mandatory attendance rule, the removal of various deans and chairpersons and the sexual harassment charges against Prof Atul Johri, which saw over 1,000 students and teachers walking from the campus to Parliament Street, was met with a police charge and water cannons near INA market.”

Can you see parallelism, adjective clauses, modifiers in the above sentence?

Writing an impressive sentence that helps you score better in IELTS/ GMAT/ PTE/ ACT is an uphill task and most students fail to write such sentences. Let us discuss some of the elements in the sentence above to learn about parallelism, modifiers, and adjective clauses.

Modifiers are those clauses that do not have an existance of their own and they give additional information about a noun (subject). In the sentence above, “taken out to protest the recent mandatory attendance rule, the removal of various deans and chairpersons and the sexual harassment charges against Prof Atul Johri“ and “which saw over 1,000 students and teachers walking from the campus to Parliament Street” are two modifiers that give additional information about the ‘long march’. The latter one is an adjective clause since it gives quality of the ‘long march’ through an adjective pronoun.

The main sentence is:

“But on Friday, things took an ugly turn when the ‘long march’ was met with a police charge and water cannons near INA market.”

Also, within the first modifier, the author has mentioned three elements – the recent, the removal, the sexual. These three elements have been made parallel by using an article “THE”. Without this article, the elements would not have been parallel since recent and sexual are adjectives while removal is a noun.
