The table below shows figures for imprisonment in five countries between 1930 and 1980.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown below.
The given bar chart depicts the number of people in thousands who were put in jail in Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, United State and Canada from the year 1930 to 1980.
Overall, the number of people who were put behind bars increased steadily over the period in Great Britain, while the figure varied greatly among other six countries. Great Britain had the least number of prisoners
in 1930 while and Canada had the highest number in 1930, but after 50 years, the number of prisoners decreased in Canada and (reserve this space for maximum and minimum only) United States had the highest number of prisoners by 1980 (after 50 years = 1980) and Australia had the lowest.
Great Britain showed a steady rise in the number of prisoners
where the figure , whose numbers (use the right connecting device. While WHERE refers to Great Britain, WHOSE refers to prisoners. ) rose significantly from around 30 thousand in 1930 to just above 80 thousand in 1980. Considering Australia, initially the number of prisoners decreased from approximately 70 thousand in 1930 to about more than 40 thousand in 1950, but thereafter it increased gradually till 1970 reaching the initial level before the figure receded again in 1980 to become the lowest figure. (Sample: In Australia, the number of prisoners dipped form 70 tousand in 1930 to about 40 thousand in 1940 and 1950 before scaling back to the intial number in 1970. Thereafter, the number dropped drastically in 1980.)
The number of
imprisonment prisoners in New Zealand was exactly (there is noting EXACTLY in a bar chart unless the numbers are specifically mentioned for each graph.) 100 thousand in 1930, in from which the figure plunged dramatically by half over the next two decades. Following that, New Zealand witnessed a gradual increase in the number of prisoners reaching above 80 thousand by the end of 1980 (good observation.). On the contrary, the figures for United States rise and fall (wrong tense. Use past tense only) fluctuated over the period, but the trend was definitely upward (I see a downward trend from 1940 to 1970 and then a sudden rise.) reaching below 140 thousand by the end of 1980 from 100 thousand in 1930. Canada which has had the highest number of prisoners in 1930 experienced a decreasing trend over the period with minor fluctuations. (Excellent statement on Canada.)
