IELTS Academic Task 1 Correction: Carbon Dioxide Emissions Per Person.

The graph below shows average carbon dioxide emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy, and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Answer:

The line graph compares the average production (production is not the same as emission. The concepts are very different. Explained in the video.) of carbon dioxide per person in four countries from 1967 through to 2007. (the correct construction is “from X to Y.”)

Overall, the amount of emissions rose for Italy and Portugal, while the figures fell for the UK and Sweden. The rate of fall was steadier and slower in the UK as compared to Sweden.

In 1967, Italy and Portugal emitted around 1 and 4 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide per person respectively (if you do not write per person, these become emissions of the whole country. This distorts the meaning of the sentence.). The production emission grew in both countries, nearly paralleled parallel to each other before (the use of before means that parallel and doublefive-folds are related to each other in some way.) the emissions doubled for Italy and rose by five-folds for Portugal in 2007.

(The same idea can be better expressed as: The emissions per person for Portugal and Italy were about 1 and 4 metric tonnes in 1967 and these increased parallelly for both countries will 2007. During this period, the emissions for Portugal grew by five folds and that for Italy doubled.)

On the other hand, the UK and Sweden produced a higher amount of CO2 per person at around 9 and 11 metric tonnes respectively in 1967. In the following decade, the figure for Sweden rose and peaked to just over 10 metric tonnes in 1977, before (this before is better placed than the previous one since it shows SEQUENCE of events.) falling to 5 metric tonnes in 2007. However, (nothing necessitates the use of “however“. It is used to show contrast. There is no contrast here.) the UK showed a steady decline in CO2 emission and reduced its emission by almost 2 metric tonnes in the given period.
