IELTS Essay August 2018: Illegal to Reject Someone Applying for a Job Because of Her Age.

In some countries, it is illegal for employers to reject job applications on the basis of age criteria. Is it a positive or negative development? Give reasons for your answer and include examples from your own experience.

Answer:

Introduction: (Introduce the topic with a general statement and STATE clearly whether this is a positive or a negative development. MENTION the reasons that you plan to EXPLAIN in the body paragraphs.)

In many countries, it is illegal to reject prospective employees on the basis of age. I think this is a commendable law and it has numerous positive effects. This not only offers people equal opportunities irrespective of age but also helps companies find the best fit for a job.

Body Paragraph 1: (EXPLAIN reason 1 – equal opportunities)

In absence of a law protecting the right to apply for a job without any age-based discrimination (maintain the context of the essay), people will not get equal opportunities (Idea linked with the context). A person has a right to learn anything at any age and then compete for a job. For example, a housewife may decide to learn advanced computer languages after 40 years of age and then apply for a job in a software company. Rejecting her application merely on the basis of age instead of her competence and qualification will not be a morally correct decision. (Explain the idea thoroughly)

Body Paragraph 2: (EXPLAIN reason 2 – best fit)

Moreover, this (referencing device – helps in maintaining the context of the essay) also helps companies find the right person for a job (Idea linked to the context). Companies need people to run operations profitably. If they discriminate against applicants on the basis of age, they may lose a prospective employee who could have performed well. For instance, the Tata group could not find an appropriate candidate due to a bias for a person above 60 years of age. The law forced it to consider applicants who were younger in age and the company appointed Mr. Cyrus Mistry, a 45-year-old person, as its group CEO. A law prohibiting such discrimination is thus beneficial for the companies as well as employees. (Explain the idea thoroughly)

Conclusion:

In conclusion, preventing discrimination between job applicants on the basis of age is beneficial for companies as well as individuals. This is economically beneficial for all sections of society.
