– What is it?
– When and where did you see it for the first time?
– Why do you like it?
Invest one minute in brainstorming about this topic’s questions. If you’ve not read my advice on developing each answer in a proper way, please read the lesson on speaking.
PLUS, you can implement the idea of collocations in this answer. Here is the link to a truly useful article: Lessons in speaking – collocations.
Transcript:
This exam is meant to test your ability for smooth communication. Long, intermittent pauses prevent proper transmission of a message. You can reduce these pauses by wisely spending the ONE minute and sticking to whatever you planned during that minute.
I’m going to talk about the animal I like the most and it’s it is the dog. (Long pause) When I, I, I, as far as I remember I don’t have, I don’t know (A number of repetitions – this shows that you’ve not planned well.) when first time I saw her (this pronoun does not refer to any noun. First mention the noun and then use the pronoun.) maybe I was 2 or 3 years old. At that time we had one dog (clearly, HER does not refer to DOG.). Its name was Jack and I I tended loved to play with it. (Pause) (tend = likely to. I’m sure you were not likely to play with the dog.) (wrong word choice.)
Planning should have been: Love all animals, favorite = Dog, my age = 3 years, one pet, Jack, loved playing. Just SIX points to cover the questions 1 and 2.
I like this particular animal because because (repetition) of various reasons. The first is that it is very energetic and active and I enjoy playing playing (repetition) with them (wrong pronoun. Noun = animal. Use IT.). (You’ve not explained the first point.) And and (repetition) the second reason is that it is very faithful animal. It is, as it is (repetition) commonly said that it is a the best friend of a man. (pause) And people (pause) people (repetition) have this pet for various reasons (Okay. You’ve stated two reasons above. Why are you stating the reasons again?). Some people raise dogs because they they they (massive repetition) are alone and some (pause) some (pause) some raise, some (massive repetition) have these pets because they because (repetition) of security reasons as they are very alert and provide strict security to a household. And, but but (repetition) the reason why I like it is it’s nature (You’ve said this at the beginning of the paragraph.)
(2:00 minutes). The examiner will cut you before this point and start asking questions.
Clearly, your response suffers from numerous issues – repetition of words and ideas, lack of explanation of ideas and pauses. The root cause of these issues is LACK OF PLANNING during the one minute. You should have planned in the following manner:
Why like? Various reasons: 1. Energetic – play day and night, on the beach, in garden. Physical exercise. Better than TV and smartphone. (write all points explaining the idea – Energetic.) 2. Faithful – protects house + owner from strangers & dangers, raises alarm – alert, very strong compared to human. 3. Kill loneliness – elders, company, moring and evening walk.
Deliver the answer in a structured manner and you’ll score better than the previous attempt. Make sure that you explain each idea in a specific manner.
