IELTS Essay September 2018: Spend Money On Restoration Of Old Buildings Or On New Houses And Roads.

Restoration of old buildings in many cities involves enormous government expenditure. It would be more beneficial to spend this money to build new houses and roads. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include examples from your own experience.

40 minutes, 250 words at least.

Answer:

Introduction: (Introduce the topic, STATE your opinion and MENTION the reasons supporting your opinion.)

Governments in various parts of the world regularly invest in new infrastructure such as roads as well as in restoration of the old structures. I think governments must preserve the old buildings since they are of immense cultural and historical significance and they are an important source of revenue for the local population.

Body Paragraph 1: (EXPLAIN reason 1 – cultural and historical significance)

Old buildings such as the Taj Mahal in India are an important part of the history and culture of a country. If these structures are not available, people will not remember their past and they will lose their identity. For example, the red fort in New Delhi is an important monument that reminds citizens of Delhi of their past. In fact, the Mughal culture, which is reflected in several old structures of the city, is an integral part of the people’s lives through language, food, and clothing. Similarly, the American government has preserved the houses of Presidents Thomas Jefferson and George Washington as a public heritage. These structures form the core of American democracy as they remind the citizens of numerous sacrifices the past generations made to form this great country.

Body Paragraph 2: (EXPLAIN reason 2 – revenue source)

Moreover, the old structures are an important source of revenue for the local residents. These structures invite both domestic and international tourists who spend a significant amount of money on guides and local products. For instance, millions of tourists visit the Eiffel Tower every year. They not only eat delicious French food at local restaurants but also purchase products such as replicas of the structure. This generates significant employment in that area and the government earns tax revenue. Similarly, the Great Wall of China supports the local economy in the north part of the country.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the restoration of old buildings is extremely important from the cultural and economic perspective. Though the governments need to invest in new houses and roads, they should not compromise the funds reserved for old structures.

    • Well, just remember this rule of pronouns “ONE pronoun can refer to ONE noun only”. This will ensure the correct usage of THEY and THEM. Sentence: “The United States has categorically told the immigrants that neither they nor their dependents are welcome in the country.” THEY and THEIR refers to IMMIGRANTS.

      I hope this helps. Best.

    • You can use the word CONSTITUTE. “The freedom of speech constitutes the core of the American democracy”. However, the use of each word depends on the context. “The freedom of speech is the foundation of the American democracy.”
