IELTS General Task 1 Correction: Not Satisfied With Furniture.

You and your family are living in rented accommodation in an English speaking country. You are not satisfied with the condition of some of the furniture.

Write a letter to your landlord. In your letter
• introduce yourself
• explain what is wrong with the furniture
• say what action you would like the landlord to take

20 minutes, 150 words at least.

Answer:

Dear Mr. Sinha,

I am a resident of one of your company’s apartments and I am writing this letter to express my dissatisfaction regarding the furniture in my this apartment. (this refers back to the company’s apartment.)

The man doesn’t know who you are. You can’t simply express dissatisfaction. MENTION who you are and then explain it in BP 1.

Important Note: A lot of students cram certain fixed structures and use them in the exam. One such structure is ‘I am writing this letter‘. There is nothing wrong in this. But the examiner will NOT view this as your original writing. She will assume that you’ve learned this and may deduct your score. Let me give you an alternate introduction:

I am a resident of one of your company’s apartments and I really love living here. However, my family and I are not satisfied with the condition of the furniture.

I have been staying with my spouse and two kids on rent in your 2 BHK apartment at MG Road from past two years. I am working as a science teacher in the nearby school and my spouse is a dentist.

It has been a pleasant experience so far as all the modern amenities for a decent living are available. It is a newly constructed building, however, the furniture in the apartment is not only of poor quality (if you’ve mentioned poor quality, it is better to explain it.) but also of outdated design. The dining table, in particular, seems to be old-fashioned with sharp glass edges which appear to be dangerous for my kids as they might get hurt while playing. Moreover, the joints of some of the chairs are weak and it seems that they will break if someone sits on them. (Explain poor quality.)

I would appreciate if you could kindly visit us by the end of the month and arrange the replacement of the old furniture with safe and trendy one.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Ramesh Kumar
