Many countries consider eighteen-year-olds to be adults, while other countries don’t. What do you think about it? Give your opinion and some relevant examples based on your own experience.
40 minutes, 250 words at least.
Answer:
Introduction: (Introduce the topic, STATE your opinion and MENTION two reasons supporting your opinion.)
Different countries have allocated different ages for deciding whether a person is an adult or not. I think an eighteen-year-old is mature enough to be declared legally as an adult since she has sufficient knowledge of the world to make decisions and she is wise to differentiate between right and wrong.
Body Paragraph 1: (EXPLAIN reason 1 – sufficient knowledge)
By the time a person turns eighteen, she has spent more than 14 years in the formal education system. This gives her sufficient knowledge of a country’s culture, economy, vegetation, politics, and society to make informed decisions. A person at this age has learned about the basics of all subjects. For instance, by this age, most students have sufficient knowledge of the human body to make an informed choice about diet. Similarly, they have also learned about events such as global warming and plastic waste to decide when to use cars and plastic bags.
Body Paragraph 2: (EXPLAIN reason 2 – right and wrong)
Moreover, most people, by this age, have developed a strong idea of morality. They know enough about honesty, integrity, love, and care to make a wise choice. They have the awareness about the rights of other individuals and know that violating those rights may attract punishment. For example, an eighteen-year-old male knows that rape is a punishable offense and if he violates a woman’s body, he will have to bear its consequences. Similarly, he understands the actions such as theft, violence, and murder and their consequences. Those who are below this age have a fuzzy idea about right and wrong.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, by the time people turn 18, they have developed the ability to think and make informed choices. This is important to make them independent in life and to transform them into responsible individuals.

Dear Paulina,
This is an agree/ disagree question. You’re supposed to give your opinion and explain it adequately. I’ve given two reasons in support of my opinion and explained each of them in separate paragraphs.

You can structure this essay on the lines of ‘discuss both views’ essay. But your opinion should be a combination of the two views – It is perfectly good to consider 18-year-olds as adults in some countries and NOT in others.

In case of “Agree and Disagree” it is imperative to choose a side; if you present both sides then you lose points. “Discuss both view and give our own opinion” is a different category where you have to present each side of the argument and state your opinion. Task achievement is very important in Writing Task 2 assignment.

Well, the AGREE-DISAGREE essays fall in two categories – 1. “Do you agree or disagree” 2. “To what extent do you agree or disagree”
In the former type, you have the option of either agreeing or disagreeing. In the latter you have three options – agree; disagree; partially agree.
