Answering this cue card is not a difficult task if you have planned properly. I suggest writing six to eight points and explaining them thoroughly. Take one minute to plan.

You are supposed to answer the three questions. However, the exam demands you to stick to the main statement. Do not deviate. Moreover, you can mention more than what is asked in the three questions. Here are my points to answer this question.

  1. Cricket – international matches, Indian Premier League, Australia cup, NEVER MISS.
  2. Why? Team Sport.
  3. Why? Culture in India.
  4. Why? My dad was a cricketer (Yes, you can lie.)
  5. Why? Hobbie.
  6. With whom? Friends and Family.

Your answer should be clearly communicated using connecting words such as firstly, secondly, finally, moreover. Do not deviate from the question statement. USe correct grammar. Remember, the principles of writing are applicable to speaking as well.

Please answer this question and feel free to share with me.

Follow-up Questions:

IELTS Speaking Advice …..

Advice Key IELTS PTE.jpg

Okay, here are a few important tips and answers to common IELTS Speaking questions.

IELTS Speaking Test is not a test of content or knowledge. It is a test of your language ability. Students are often worried about the quality of their ideas. Do not worry whether your answer is relevant or not as long as it is delivered in correct English.

Moreover, it is not a test of how accurately and truthfully you give an answer. In other words, you can LIE. Just make sure you do not make any grammar mistake or lose fluency while thinking of something creative.

Do not repeat your statement and/ or words. “I believe the sports are important because ….. important because …….”. No. You’ll lose score for that. Even if you’ve said something wrong, do not try to correct it. Doing so will unnecessarily create stress and will consume energy that you could have used in delivering the right answer (right = correct English).

Should I repeat the question statement? Well, try not to. Repeating the question statement is often construed as the candidate’s inability to present an answer in her own words. Practice speaking in your own language. Develop your vocabulary.

Speaking English is not meant for the IELTS class only. I advise students to speak on various common topics at home. Observe the things around you closely – family, technology, neighbors, city, television, newspaper, furniture, clothes, jewelry, books, college, job. The list is endless.

Record your voice and you can share it with me. I’ll be happy to offer some feedback. My WhatsApp number is +91 9888922203.

The more you practice speaking on these topics, the better will be your command over the language. This will not only give you greater firepower to extend your answers, but also develop the ability to talk about likes, dislikes, habits, and opinions.

Best wishes for your endeavor!

IELTS Speaking Cue Card (September 2017): Important Event in Country’s History.

history IELTS PTE

Describe an event that was important in your country’s history. Please say

– What was the event?
– Was there a person who played the main role in the event?
– Why was it so important, in your opinion?

Answer:

Let me present a few hints to this question and resist the tendency to write a complete answer. You’ll have about one minute to prepare the answer. Use that time wisely to write about six to eight points that you plan to elaborate during the two-minute conversation with the examiner.

The first question is fairly simple to answer. A few caveats though.

  1. Do not give a one-word answer. Don’t just say “Jallianwala Bagh” (in India) or “Pearl Harbour” (in the U.S.A)
  2. Do not say “The historical event I would like to talk about is ….” This is a blunder. I consider this Harakiri (a suicide).
  3. Give an opening statement. A general one. For instance, “I’m a history admirer/ follower and I’ve read numerous events in the history of China. An event I consider the most important is ……” Or, if you do not like History, “I’m not a history follower. However, last week I attended a seminar on the South African history in which an author discussed the ……….”

The second question demands naming a person who played an important role. Again, the biggest mistake is to give a one-word answer or repeating the question statement: “The person who played the main role was ….” DON’T do that.

You can simply say I’m not a history follower. However, last week I attended a seminar on the South African history in which an author discussed the ………. in which Nelson Mandela played the central role.

While planning, note down at least four points why the event was important in you country’s history. Write down the importance in short-crisp words and not in sentences. For instance, the four points on “Attack on Pearl Harbour” will include.

  1. U.S naval base – Hawaii, Pacific
  2. Japanese Attack – U.S.A, early 1940s
  3. Shock to Americans.
  4. World War 2 – U.S enters.

Note that all the points are in a chronological order and not in a haphazard manner. Once you’re sure of these points, present them in the form of sentences.

Pearl Harbour, a U.S naval base in Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean, was attacked by the Japanese fighter planes in the early 1940s. The attack came as a surprise to the Americans since the country was neutral and had not sided with either the Allies or the Axis. In response to this attack, the U.S. joined hands with the Allies to defeat Germany and Japan in the World War 2.

Simple. Clean. Planned.

Follow-up questions.

  1. Why is learning history important?
  2. How can people learn history nowadays?
  3. Are there any other ways to do it?
  4. What is the role of museums in history study?

Since then, I’ve been using this website for all the modules of the exam. The online faculty members are experts in their respective modules and I write two writing-tasks every day. I also practice three reading passages along with four listening tests. The unique feature of this website is that all my essays are reviewed every day and I get feedback to improve my writing. I’m planning to use this website to score more than seven bands in the exam.

Follow-up Questions.

– What are the effects of the Internet on children?
– Do you think that it is good?
– Does the Internet replace TV in entertainment?
– What is the role of the Internet in education?
– Can you depend on it?
– Some people think that online learning will eventually replace the traditional teaching methods, what is your opinion?

new shop IELTS PTE.jpg

Talk about a new shop that opened recently in your locality. Please say

– What does it sell?
– Did you shop there and with whom?
– Do you think it’s going to be popular?

Answer:

Writing this answer requires you to first identify your taste. Imagine the product first – clothes, chocolates, food, shoes, jewelry, etcetera. Let me write this answer on a chocolate shop.

I live in a Chandigarh, a cosmopolitan city. The variety of food in this city is astonishing. You’ll easily find Thai, Continental, Chinese, Bengali, Italian, and Punjabi food outlets. (Introductory sentences)

However, recently a unique chocolate shop opened near my home. It sells chocolates from different parts of the world. (What does it sell?)

Since my brother and I love chocolates, we visit this shop every weekend and purchase European and South American to Chinese and Indonesian products. We really like indulging in Belgian dark chocolates. (Shop and with whom?)

The shop opened barely a week ago, and I can see people crowding the place in search of their favorite chocolate. I think the shop is doing a healthy business and making a good profit. It is already popular with customers and with an optimum mix of marketing, service, and quality, it will be successful in the long-term. (Popular?)

– Where is it?
– What does it look like? What is interesting about it?
– When and why did you visit it?

A similar question is:

Describe your perfect home (a house or an apartment) that you would like to have in the future. Please say:

– When you would like to have it
– Where it would be located
– What it would look like

Answer:

Housing seems to be a preferred topic in IELTS. Here are similar questions:

G.T. Writing Task 1: Recently moved to a different house.

G.T. Writing Task 1: Home renovation.

Last week I visited a friend, who works as an architect, in New Delhi. I was deeply impressed with his house. (Introductory statement, when and where.)

It is a small house built over an area of about 2000 square feet only. However, the design and idea are really impressive. The house is environmentally sustainable with rain-water harvesting systems to use rain water and use of materials to reflect back sun’s heat to reduce the need for air-conditioning. Moreover, he has installed solar power systems to cut reliance on external, fossil-fuel based electricity. Overall, the ecological footprint of the house is really low. (Look like and Why interesting)

I’m working on a sustainable development project. He had told me about his initiatives and love for sustainability. Consequently, I visited his house to collect data for my project. (Why you visited.)

Follow-up questions.

IELTS Speaking: Interview; Cue Card (A Child You Know); Follow-Up Questions.

IELTS Speaking Interview.png

Complete IELTS Speaking Test with interview, cue-card and follow-up questions.

What’s your name?
I’m Sartaj Singh Sidhu. You can call me Sartaj.

Are you working or studying?
I’m currently employed in a construction company.

How long have you been working for this company?
I have been serving this company since January 2015.

What are your main duties?
My task as a construction manager involves ensuring the quality of construction activities at my site and reporting the daily work done to the project manager.

What do you like most about the work you do?
I had no experience of working in the construction industry before I joined this company. Consequently, I learn new things about financing, accounting, quality control, worker management and client satisfaction every day.

What would you like to change or improve in your work?
There are better ways of procuring construction raw material than we are currently employing. I would love to change our construction scheduling method as well. Currently, we are completing projects in 18 months on an average. With the changes, I suggest we can reduce completion time to 16 months.

Do you like shopping?
I’m not much into shopping. However, I love shopping electronic gadgets such as latest mobile phones and laptops.

What food items do you buy? Do you shop alone?
I regularly purchase food items such as vegetables, milk, pulses, and bread for daily consumption at my home. To purchase these items my wife often accompanies me.

What time do you do the shopping? Why?
I usually shop food items in the evening while coming back from the office. Both my wife and I wake up late in the morning. Since we have to be in the office by 10 am, we do not have time to purchase these items in the morning.

Cue-Card: Describe a child you know.

You should say:

  1. How old is he or she?
  2. What does s/he look like?
  3. How you two are related?
  4. Do you like/dislike this child?

Answer:

I love children. However, I’m particularly fond of elder brother’s son. My nephew is about two years old.

Like most healthy two-year-old kids, he is cute and very beautiful. With large eyes and a wide smile, he is an attractive boy. Since all male members of my family have a height of 6 feet and above, my nephew is too tall as compared to other boys of his age. I’m sure, his height and strong body structure will help him become a sports person just like his father.

I love my nephew not only because I love all young children, but also because he is the only kid in the family. Consequently, all family members love to play with him, and he is the apple of everyone’s eye.

Follow up questions:

What kind of children activities are there available in your city?
Chandigarh is a city of parks. We have the largest park area per 100,000 residents in the world. So, children mostly play outdoor games such as soccer, cricket, hockey, and tennis. Moreover, there are museums designed for children. We have a zoo which displays animals from all over India. Moreover, a lot of painting and essay writing competitions for children are held by various organizations throughout the city.

How can we promote the interest a child in such activities?
Well, parents and guardians must take children to these activities and personally show interest. A child will engage in painting or writing if parents equally participate in these activities. A child will not go to museums as long as parents are not interested. Parents should not only accompany a child to the zoo but also explain the child the behavior of various animals.

Do you think indoor activities will replace outdoor activities in the future?
With the proliferation of internet, games and smart phones, I think kids are gradually moving away from sports activities and team work to gadgets and isolation. Engaging television programs and computer games consume a lot of kid’s time. This time could have been better spent in sports. I guess indoor activities will gradually replace out door activities in the future.

IELTS Speaking Cue Card: Good Service from a Person.

Good Service IELTS PTE.jpg

Talk about an occasion when you received a good service from a person. Please say

– What was the service?
– When and where did you receive it?
– Why did you like it so much?

Answer:

The image that crops up in the minds of most people on hearing the words “Good Service” is that of a restaurant. Today I would like to project a new image. Since most of the readers of this blog will be going abroad as a student, let me present STUDENT SERVICES as a pillar of excellent service.

Remember, IELTS does not judge you on the truth of your answer but on its presentation.

Last year I joined the University of Western Ontario as a graduate student. Since I had never been outside India, I was anxious about changes in lifestyle in a new country. However, the anxiety did not last long due to excellent services and friendly behavior of the student cell.

The surprisingly good service started right at the Toronto airport. There was an Indian student at the airport to receive me and make me feel at home. He not only introduced me to the university and the course but also told me about Canada’s diverse culture. Once I was in the student residence, the student cell members met me personally and they had arranged a perfect room for me. The excellent service of the cell made me feel that I had never left my home. (About service, when and where.)

I loved the service because it extinguished my anxiety about a new country and assimilated me in the diverse Canadian culture. (Why like it)

Discussion

  1. How did you feel after it? (This question is asked if you’ve not answered the third part of the question correctly.)
  2. What is the difference between services from a big or small company?
  3. What jobs require staff to get in touch with a lot of people?
  4. What qualities should the staff member have for such job? Why?
  5. What should people do when they receive bad service?

Please discuss the follow-up questions in the comments box. We look forward to hearing your answers. Good Luck!

IELTS Speaking Cue Card July 2017: An Activity that Excited you.

activity IELTS PTE

Talk about any activity that you did that excited you. Please say

  1. What was it and when did you do it?
  2. Who was there with you?
  3. What did you feel after doing this?

IELTS has asked this cue card, like most cue cards, earlier as well albeit in a different form. Here is a link for all students to explore.

Try a new activity.

Answer:

I’m an adventurer and I love trying new and exciting activities. (Introductory sentence)

Last month I went on an adventure sports trip to Manali, Himachal Pradesh, India. The trip involved a lot of activities such as trekking. I had already attempted most of them except Bungee Jumping. (What was it? When?)

Since this activity involves jumping from a height of several hundred meters, few of my friends had heart for this. None of my family members attempted it though. (Who was there?)

There is no experience like that of falling from a height of several hundred meters. The feeling of gravity pulling you down is beyond expression. All I can say is my heart was beating really fast. It was a mixture of thrill and horror both of which increased as I came closer to the ground. (Feeling)

Follow-up questions:

  1. Why do you prefer adventure activities?
  2. What other activities do you like?
  3. Are you planning any adventures or activities in the near future?
  4. How will you accomplish that?

Describe a future plan that you have, not related to work or study. Please say

– What do you plan to do and when?
– How will you achieve it?
– Why do you want to do it?

IELTS has asked this question in several formats earlier. Here are a few related and useful links.

A work you would like to do.

Future Plans.

Try a new activity.

I’m, however, going to provide a fresh answer here. Please go through all these articles to improve your grasp of the topic.

I’m an adventurer, and I’ve been to more than a hundred countries. However, no world journey is complete without a visit to the largest and coldest stretch of land called Antarctica. I’m planning to spend a month touring the cold, ice thick continent next year, (What and when)

Touring Antarctica is not an easy feat. The continent is covered in several meters of snow, and a few places are nothing but ice floating on water. However, I’ve toured the highest mountain on Earth – the Mount Everest, and I’m a member of a club that tours only such dangerous places. Its team members have considerable experience in Antarctica, and I will use it. As far as monetary resources are concerned, several local companies in my area have financially supported my plan. (Achieve)

I’ve been to a lot of places but nothing as extreme as the Antarctica. It is the dream of every adventurer to experience all forces of nature. (Why do it?)

Follow-up questions:

  1. Who else is involved in this plan?
  2. Is it important to have plans for the future?
  3. Is it important for children to have dreams or future plans? Why?
  4. What was your dream as a child?
  5. Why did you have that dream?

  2. Explain its interiors.
  3. What kind of food it serves.
  4. How is it special

IELTS will give you one minute to plan and up to 2 minutes to deliver. Go Go Go!

Hold your horses, let me first give you a list of relevant topics.

A cafe you often visit.

An unusual food.

Answer:

I am a social person, and I love dining in restaurants every weekend. (Introductory statement)

Last month, I visited “Hibachi”, an Indo-Chinese restaurant in Sector 8, Chandigarh. (Name and Place)

It is a modern restaurant in Chandigarh’s posh locality. Since real estate rents are exorbitantly high, it is in a relatively small area of about 15 feet by 30 feet. The restaurant is designed with Japanese wooden interiors and has an open kitchen for all customers to see. Even the food is served with chop sticks. (Interiors)

It serves Chinese, Japanese and Thai food. (Kind of food)

I have never eaten a tastier sushi and Kung Pao chicken as I’ve eaten here. Each item is specially prepared and customized to suit a customer’s taste. Things are not standardized like other restaurants. (Special)

  1. Which is better – home-made food or a restaurant’s food?
  2. Why do you prefer restaurant food?

IELTS Speaking Cue Card July 2017: An Unusual Food

Talk about an unusual food you have eaten abroad. Please say

– Where was it and what was the food?
– Did you like or dislike that food? Why?
– Why did you decide to try it?

Answer:

IELTS offers you one minute to prepare an answer and two minutes (maximum) to speak.

I am a foodie and a frequent traveler. So, I get opportunities to taste dishes from different cultures. (Introductory statement)

Last year I traveled to China’s capital Beijing. In a traditional Chinese restaurant, I tried a strange dish made up of sea weeds. Sea weeds, as you know, are vegetarian foods grown in the sea and are very nutritious. (Where was it, what was the food)

I loved tasting it the first time. No other food comes close to it in terms of taste and it is difficult for me to explain it. I loved it not only because of the taste but also due to the abundance of nutrients in it. (Like or dislike. Why.)

Since I’m a traveler, I have first-hand experience of how humans will face a shortage of nutritious food in the future. Scientists have proposed seaweed farms as a solution to the problem. I just wanted to taste the future of human food. (Why try.)

Follow-up questions:

  1. Do you prefer to buy foreign foods?
  2. Why do people buy foreign foods?
  3. Why are humans facing food shortage? Propose a solution.
  4. Would you spend more on foreign foods?
  5. Why is that?

As a professional doctor, I’ve participated in numerous national and international events. (Introductory sentence)

However, last year I attended a seminar at the United Nations headquarters in Washington D.C on a deadly virus recently discovered in India. (When and Where)

I participated in the seminar on behalf of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) since I’ve worked and written scientific papers on the virus in leading journals. I delivered a seminar on the environmental conditions in which the virus proliferates and infects humans. (Role)

Working on the seminar was the most difficult task. Since I’m a working professional with more than 10 hours work schedule every day, preparing for the lecture was a Herculean task. I had to give up all leisures and cut on my sleep to achieve the target. (Hardest Part)

However, the sacrifice was worth taking since the seminar earned me a name in the international community. (Closing)

Discussion

  1. How frequently do you attend events?
  2. Should people do hard things?
  3. Why don’t most people take risks?
  4. Should governments prohibit people from taking risks? Why is that?

IELTS Cue-Card June 2017 (July 2017): An Important Change in Your Life.

Important Change IELTS PTE

Describe a recent important change in your life. Please say

– What is the change?
– When and where did it happen?
– How did you feel about it?

IELTS asked this cue card both in June 2017 and July 2017.

“An important change in your life”, that sounds difficult, right? Well, once you’re done with reading this article, it’ll no longer be.

Firstly, you’ve to identify the change. What do you mean by an IMPORTANT change? Any alteration that has influenced your life deeply, changed its course is considered significant. Perhaps you got married, scored 9.0 in IELTS, secured admission to Harvard University or got a job. Let’s get started with the answer.

“Admission to a prestigious M.B.A program had always been my dream. Last October, after much deliberation, I decided to apply for the Harvard School of Business. After writing essays and submitting the application in January 2017, I was invited to an interview at the Taj, Mumbai, in March and was finally selected in April. (Change, When and Where)

I was short of words to express my feelings when I was selected into the program. My family and I were happy that I was soon going to join the most prestigious M.B.A program in the world. However, my greatest feeling was that of satisfaction. I was satisfied with my career’s past progress and the course it was going to take soon.” (Feelings)

IELTS Speaking Cue Card July 2017: An Interesting Book.

1

Talk about an interesting book that you would like to read again. You should say

– What book is it?
– When did you read it?
– Why would you like to read it again?

Answer:

“I’m not a regular book reader. Since I’m a doctor working on 12-hour schedules, I have little time for this hobby (Introduction. Assuming most of you don’t read books and you’ll not lie in the exam).

However, during college days I read “Being Mortal” an interesting book by Dr. Atul Gawande. It is a book on death and learning how to have a more functional and productive life. (What and When)

Since I’m working with patients who are in critical condition and, unfortunately, some even lose their lives, it becomes important for me to keep the reality of death in my mind and make sure all my patients get the right cure so that they can spend a more functional life. Dr. Gawande has conveyed this exact idea in his book. (Why read again)

All questions answered along with the introduction. Time for follow-up questions.

  1. Why is reading important for our lifestyle?
  2. Do you think people read less nowadays? Why?
  3. What can be done to influence them to read more?
  4. Should professionals read only the books related to their profession? Why?
